I was reading the Salty Droid the other night. If you have not heard of this guy, he exposes a lot of the very dirty things many of the gurus do in the Internet marketing space. It’s actually pretty funny and shows how they are not really the greatest marketers.

But it got me thinking about how most websites and people that talk about making money don’t really set the right expectations. And one of the first questions many new people ask is…

How Much Money Can You Make From A Website?

The simple answer if a lot! But it’s obviously a lot more complicated than just that alone. Here’s the brass tax about what you can expect. For that that are reading, this might scare you away.At least in the beginning, building an Internet business is an insane amount of work. INSANE amount of work.While you can make money fast, the odds are against you… especially if you have a full time job.It will take you months if not many years until you actually start to earn good money from your websites.It will be a full time job promoting and caring for your websites and your customers. The margarita dream doesn’t really exist.Yes, there are exceptions to all these rules and instances.No you can’t make money with just three clicks of a mouse. I guess you can’t if you didn’t count the millions upon millions of clicks up to those last three clicks.Yes, building a website and doing SEO can be mind numbing work and don’t be fooled, it is most definitely work.Yes, PPC is very hard to learn and it takes a lot of money to practice and get a campaign working.The best way to learn is not through a course but though doing it yourself and making a lot of mistakes.Get used to failure and use it to win.Be prepared for frustration and sleepless nights wondering why you can’t make anything work.Listen to your BS meter… if it shouts it’s too good to be true, either run or find out the full story.Yes, you will have to give up watching TV at nighttime if you want to make this work, only as a beginner.Yes, you will have to work all the time to make this work at least in the beginning.Yes, this list is pretty darn harsh but it’s the truth.

OK Enough Of The Downer… Here Is Some Upper

Doing all of this is one of the most rewarding feelings ever.The skill set you will learn is incredible and people will actively seek out your help. (I actually have local businesses that seek me out for help and I get to turn them down… it’s a cool feeling.)Your mind will be opened to a whole new world of possibility.You will continue to fail though, but at a much lower frequency.And this can go on and on and on!

The Bottom Line

I guess I just want to be completely black and white with you. No matter what type of business you want to start, you are going to have to bust your ass to make it work. You are going to have to bust your ass on a continual basis.

That is why so few people succeed because a very small percentage of people want to work that hard. It’s a simple fact.

But if you work hard and you do it consistently, you will succeed and it will be awesome.

How To Host A Website: Step-by-Step On Getting Your Website Up And Running

Learning how to host a webiste is actually much easier than you may think, but it’s a question that a lot of beginners ask. So it needs to be answered!

Let’s first define a few things:

Hosting – It’s best to think of this as your hard drive in the sky. In order to get a website up on the Internet, you need this hard drive and it’s where all your website files are going to go.

These days you really don’t have to worry about FTP or anything like that.

FTP – This stands for file transfer protocol. What that means is… it’s a program that lets you transfer files from your computer to your hosting account. However with WordPress these days, you really don’t need that anymore. I rarely ever use it.

Cpanel – This is the backend of your hosting account. It’s where you can install WordPress, where you can set up email accounts, and do a bunch of other very complex things that you will never have to worry about.

Our Assumptions For Your Website

I am going to assume and recommend that you will be using WordPress for your website. This is the best CMS by far and you really don’t have to worry about using anything else. At least in the beginning.

Step 1: Get A Good Hosting Account

You first need a good hosting account. Trust me, there are some terrible hosting accounts out there. And here is the thing…

When they are trying to sell you on using them, they all say the same things. It’s like the cell phone companies. They literally all say the same thing, but some are clearly better than others.

I personally use two different hosting companies for the majority of my websites.

My favorite is Hostgator.

They have been really good to me and I run some really large websites on their shared servers. They are barely down and when there are some issues, I just call them and they let me know what is going on.

What is really great about them is their pricing. You can get a good business account for about $14 a month and they only charge you the $14 a month.

Some other hosting companies say it’s only $14 a month, but they will charge you for a full year in advance. So you end up paying over $100 all at once.

They use Cpanel so working with our websites is super easy. Like I mentioned above, you only have to get WordPress installed through it then everything else you can control through WordPress.

That is really all you need to know about them. They are good and they do what you need to host your own websites.

My second favorite is Bluehost.

Bluehost is very similar to Hostgator, the only real difference is they do charge for a full year in advance so you will have to come more out of pocket with them.

Other than that, they are very similar.

You might be wondering why I have all these different hosting accounts. Since I have a lot of websites, I prefer to spread them out over different accounts. It helps me to better hide my ownership of the sites.

Step 2: Getting Your Website Up On Your Hosting Account

This is really easy. All you are going to do is use a program in Cpanel called Fantastico. This will let you install WordPress in about 5 clicks of the mouse. You will also have to fill out some information, but it’s super easy.

That is exactly how to host a website. It’s really easy and once you do it once, you will never have an issue with it again. If you do run into problems, just call their support and they will definitely help you out.

How The “Modern” SEO Optimizes Their Website For Top Rankings

I was reading my RSS reader yesterday and came across a blog post from Mashable. If you are not reading Mashable or TechCrunch then you better start. They are a great way to see what is going on in the online business worlds.

Anyway, they wrote an article about what they call the “modern” SEO and how to get your website ranking. It’s an interesting look but it brings up some really good points that I think you need to take heart in. You can read what they have to say, but below you will hear more my personal take on each little topic.

1. Local is Taking Over

I am sure you have done a local search on Google and you can see that it really does take over the entire top ten. It’s bigger and hard to miss, plus from the heat map you can see that it’s where people are clicking… evdn if there are websites listed above.

Since you are not really in a local business, most likely, just think about how your affiliate site or ecommerce site can fit a local market. Maybe you should get a business address in a big city and optimize your website for that local market along with your main keywords.

If you could take a top ranking in New York City, you can probably get a ton of traffic.

2. You Need Social Now More Than Ever

I think social is still getting more and more important, but from the markets that I’m in, there really is not a huge amount of sharing going on. For example when I go outside the tech world, there seems to be barely any sharing using Google+, it’s all with Facebook.

I don’t think it’s influencing ranking as much as people think right now, but I think that will change more and more as time goes on so you better start it anyway.

3. Content Links Are King

This is definitely the truth and you really should only be getting content links. A content link is a link inside the body of an article or blog post. It’s much higher value and if you know the secrets that I know, then you can get all the content links you need to rank really well.

4. Think of People and Not Robots When You Optimize Your Site

This is pretty common sense and has actually been said for a long time. You want to give your page the necessary spider food so it knows where to best rank your page, but you want the page to read for humans.

This really isn’t hard to do. It think on page optimization is important but links are always going to be more important. Just make sure you have good titles and the keyword does show up in your article a couple times.

5. Check Your Backend: schema.org

I have not really messed around with this at all because my attention go more towards getting good links than anything else. However this makes lots of sense.

Apparently this is all about getting rich snippets, or making your search engine listing look really great and full of extra information. That will drastically increase your click thru rate which is what you want to happen.

The most clicks you get the more traffic. I can’t say much else just yet but you can be sure that this is in my to-do list program and will be handled shortly.

6. Know Your Data

Data is really important and it’s getting harder to collect every since Google has tried to have more and more people signed into their accounts when they are doing their searching. From what I understand the keyword data does not get passed since the search environment is different for each person.

However, I suggest that you collect lots of data about your sites and your ranking. It’s really important because you might be optimizing for a keyword that is supposed to get lots of traffic, but it really doesn’t get much at all.

If you are running an ecommece site then go with Google Analytics. If you are doing anything else, use GetClicky.
